Bases
We've defined a base as a substance that accepts H+ ions.  Let's take a closer look at what happens using a common household base: ammonia (NH3).

In every molecule of ammonia, there is one nitrogen atom and three hydrogen atoms, as shown below.

When ammonia is mixed with another substance, such as water, the ammonia molecules accept the H+ ions from water molecules.
